How it works

We divide the weight you want to lose by your weekly pace. For example, losing 40 pounds at 1 pound a week takes about 40 weeks, or a little over 9 months.

Real progress isn’t a straight line. The first couple of weeks are often faster (some of that is water), and loss usually slows as you get closer to your goal.

Questions

How long does it take to lose 20 pounds?

At a steady 1 pound a week, about 20 weeks (roughly 5 months). At 2 pounds a week, about 10 weeks.

What’s a realistic weight-loss pace?

0.5–2 pounds a week for most people, or about 0.5–1% of your body weight. Faster is possible at first if you have a lot to lose.

Why is my weight loss slower than the calculator says?

Your maintenance calories drop as you lose weight, and calorie tracking is never perfect. Recalculate your calories every 10 pounds and keep protein high.
