Ideal weight calculator
See the healthy weight range for your height and what four well-known medical formulas say your ideal weight is.
| Formula | Ideal weight |
|---|---|
| Devine (1974) | 131 lb |
| Robinson (1983) | 131 lb |
| Miller (1983) | 135 lb |
| Hamwi (1964) | 129 lb |
These formulas were made for medicine dosing, not looks. Muscle, frame size and age all matter. Use the range as a guide.
How it works
The healthy range is the weight that puts you at a BMI of 18.5–24.9. We also show four classic formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi). They each add a set amount of weight per inch over 5 feet.
Pick a goal you can reach
Your “ideal” weight on paper might not be realistic or necessary. Losing just 5–10% of your body weight improves blood pressure, blood sugar and how you feel. Set a first goal, reach it, then decide on the next one.
Questions
What is the ideal weight for my height?
For a healthy BMI, multiply your height in inches squared by 18.5 and by 24.9, then divide each by 703. The calculator does this for you.
Why do the formulas give different numbers?
They were built from different data, mostly for dosing medicine. None accounts for muscle or frame size, which is why we show a range.
Should my goal weight be my ideal weight?
Not necessarily. A goal that’s 10% below where you are now is a great first target. You can always set another after that.
